Dude, nice find. Seriously considering that satellite phone.

The price looks very reasonable, first I've heard about that one.

I really enjoy hiking alone, a phone like that would be a nice piece of mind.

Where are you people camping so far off the grid that you need one? Even if it is fairly remote, there aren't that many places with seriously dangerous animals or lack of cell coverage anymore.

Lack of cell coverage is an issue in southern Ohio where I backpack most. In the summer there are enough fellow hikers it isn't an issue, but in the winter you may not see anyone, especially during weekdays.

My biggest concern is having an injury like a broken leg which would make it difficult to hike out.

Lots of places without cell coverage.

At any time, I am a 45 minute drive from being out of cell service. Deep woods and mountains aren't exactly cell friendly. I have family in areas where cell phones are not in any way reliable.

For that matter, I know of one place in town where if you're driving through and you're on the phone, you lose service. About a 100 ft by 100 ft area. Tiny but dead.

I know. Personal beacons are almost as much and don't have nearly half the features. I'm actually wondering if I could make one of those satellite phones work as a full time phone.

Edit: you can't make calls on it, apparently.

I didn't look yet, but sometime the service itself is very costly, to where you may only activate it when you're out on a trip.
