If I was interested in mining bitcoin, how best to proceed?

I don't know the first thing about it... I've mined for phuks a bit but I wouldn't mind doing it a bit on my own... how would that translate into actual currency? I do have 5 or 6 old quad cores lying around...

You get a miner like xmrig, set it up, point it to a mining pool and leave it running.
