I don't know the first thing about it... I've mined for phuks a bit but I wouldn't mind doing it a bit on my own... how would that translate into actual currency? I do have 5 or 6 old quad cores lying around...

In most parts of the world you need specific hardware now to catch up even with the power bill. CPUs and GPUs aren't efficient enough today.

to catch?

Don't do it, you'll end up losing money on electricity bills and the amount of bitcoin you get won't be enough to make a profit. We mine Monero, it is probably the most mineable coin that is actually worth something.

I have unlimited hydro included.... how would I go about mining monero?

You get a miner like xmrig, set it up, point it to a mining pool and leave it running.

Bitcoin is out of reach unless you want to sink $1000s into bitcoin-specific equipment that will be outdated by the end of the year. You can mine many altcoins with a normal everyday GPU and even some CPUs. Whattomine.com will give you an idea of what you can expect moneywise from different coins. I've been messing around with it for a few months. Currently mining vertcoin. Don't expect to make a lot of money unless you want to build a mining rig.
