That is pretty dumb. Maybe he thought he was small potatoes and wouldn't really get bothered? No idea.
And I have no idea about the person or circumstances he's in. I just saw it and knew many people on here were big into Bitcoin and thought it would be appreciated.
Silk Road was the first time I used bitcoin. Looking back, it pisses me off that I spent so much money on there. The price has increased by 2000% since then. It also irritates me that I was put under unnecessary risk by someone doing something so stupid. I know it's illegal, but still.
Whilst I agree with the general sentiment, after reading about the whole thing I don't think this was his reasoning. He was in it for the money.
Also, the way he was caught is just plain retarded. After he created the site, he went onto another site (clearnet, not using Tor) using the same wifi point he was using to do business on Silk Road in a cafe near his house. He made a comment like "have you seen this great site called Silk Road you can use to buy drugs from" or something equally ridiculous. He made the comment with the same username he used on Silk Road. So all you had to do to find him was google the first mention of Silk Road on the internet.
