When I was a kid a player could expect some chin music the next time up or be hbp if the opponent's manager felt it necessary. Now MLB is so strict about pitchers intentionally hitting batters that the batters don't worry about retaliation for their antics.
I think the pitcher last night got Donaldson worked up by not responding to Donaldson asking if it was intentional or accidental. The video I first saw clearly showed Donaldson asking "what was that," as he walked towards first.
