With my limited experience of being able to afford spending whatever I want, that hasn't rung true for me. I still buy most of my nail polish and hair products at the supermarket. The expensive brands have flashier packaging, but aren't any better.
Fancy cars are a guy thing, but my Accord hasn't needed anything but fluid changes and new wipers. Peter's fancy continental's been in the shop >5 times in the last two years.
There are some things worth insane spending - KitchenAid/Hobart mixers, Viking appliances, etc. But you still have to be very diligent when comparing products and not let a high price blindly sway you towards that item thinking that it's price makes it better.
