As bad as SIlicon Valley companies are, totalitarian Chinese are far worse. Those concerned about privacy would not go for these companies. Unless there are those in the west who would profit off such a move, don't expect it to get favorable treatment in the media either. On the contrary, it would threaten rich VC investors, so the news would be filled with stories of how dangerous it is. Or more likely it would just be ignored entirely.

Well, VK (vKontakte) never took off in the west and it's a pretty solid platform--but that's Russian. If they can make it not FEEL and LOOK Chinese, I don't see why not. Language has always been the greatest barrier, aside from geography.
