Most of the time they do.
The number of children being 'held' is a small fraction. Just like if a white Canadian tried to run the border. They hold the adult, and hand the children off to social. Social would then locate a parent/guardian and return them. It is a quick and easy process with a country like Canada that keeps accurate records and cooperates.

They are dealing with a very large criminal element in the south, though. In some cases the children are crossing with people they are not related to, and nobody is using their real names. So how do they find parents when they can't even be sure about the childs identity? When there is no way to verify anything, how do they know they are not handing the child back to a sex-trafficker?
Most of the time, if a child is held, it's in their best interests.

A very large portion of the news and information floating around about 'migrant children', is slanted, propaganda, or outright misinformation.
Drama manufactured to increase media income and further a political agenda.

Well said. To add: illegals enter the country and when caught know to immediately request asylum.

The right way is to go to a port of entry and do the request. Once you crossed the border they've broken the law and get separated just like everyone.
