It is a little late for this, but I did a type of immersion therapy to help my old dog to get over her fear of fireworks.

First, I started out with the small Snaps and gave her constant praise and treats while I let a few off. The next day, I did more Snaps and praise until she stopped freaking out. After that, I moved up to bigger and louder fireworks each day and eventually she had almost no problem with them. This process took about a week.

Wow, that's amazing.

Too late but I'm going to try this.

What about thunderstorms?

Thanks! I got the dog from the pound and I am pretty sure she was abused.

Shortly after she moved in with us, she would run away and hide in the corner whenever someone said "goddammit". I used the same technique ( gave her lots of praise and treats as I repeated "goddammit" over and over) to break her if that fear.

You're a good dog mom/dad. I used to date a girl who worked for the Humane society and she had three "unadoptable" dogs she took so they wouldn't be put down. I had to move pretty slow generally because one of the dogs was on edge constantly. She sniffed me once after 3 months and that was "huge progress" according to the gf. Formerly abused animals are hard to deal with, so good on you.
