I'd prefer not to spend more than, say, $300 or $400. NVidia only. Was never a fan of other cards. Mostly looking for what the budget performance series line is right now so I can research from there.

gtx1070ti - $500

gtx1070 - $450ish

gtx1060 - $300ish

Thanks. Seems like a great place to start. I'll start taking a look at what I can find.

Is the 970 a better option than the 1060? It's been awhile since I looked at card performance.

I wouldn't recommend anybody get a 970 at this point. If you can even find one, the 1060 will be priced the same and be significantly better. The step from 9-series to 10-series was pretty big. The 1050ti may also be good for you.

Alternatively, the Radeon RX570 and 580 are reasonably priced as well and are solid cards, mostly the latter. There's been a lot of sales on the 580.

The cards are about equal with the 1060 a bit better and usually with more ram. Both are 1080p cards.

You can get away with 1440p on at 1060. I run three monitors and my main one is a 1440p monitor and I usually get like 80 - 90 FPS in games I play. As long as you aren't playing the newest titles at max settings you should be good.

What card do you have now and what games are you playing? At that price range you might be purchasing more card than you need.

NVidia GeForce GT 720. It was a sale/deal and better than what the machine came with. I mostly do dev work but I'm getting tired of bad framerates on the rare instance that I actually play something.

You could spend about 150 and get a GTX 1050, it would be a huge step up. Depending on what you play, it may not make sense to pay more than that.

I have a GT 740 in my daughter's PC, it's not a powerful card, but it works well enough for her.

I wouldn't go lower than a 1070 at this point. That's mostly because 4k monitors and 144hz monitors are coming on strong, and worth it for many. A 1060 will be okay on most games at 1080p, just not on the highest settings.

Yeah, I'm just looking for something that would last a couple of years while I spec out my next system. Last time I spec-ed out a full build, it took me 4 months just to get the parts list and then the system lasted me 8 years before the system age mostly wasn't worth it. It still runs and I only use it as a server now (SQL, TFS, and the like). I mean, yeah, I could drop cash on it and make it a current powerhouse again (that's why I took so long researching everything) but at this point, I just want to spec out a top of the line, get WIndows 7 Pro before I can't anymore and then wait another 7+ years while Microsoft straightens itself out. But until then, I just need something for my dev box. So it looks like the genera consensus is going to be around 1070, give or take.

Thanks.

No recommendations because I am in the same boat. My computer is getting to be a bit outdated but the continued high cost of graphics cards make me leery of upgrading.

Graphic card prices have dropped 60 percent or more in the last couple of months.

That's certainly amusing but no thanks. I kind of prefer to get directly through "respectable" channels if I'm spending more than, say, $125 on something.

What are you using right now? I'd recommend waiting out the storm and not buying a new card right now. The 10 series is already 2+ years old and the price has only significantly increased. You'd honestly be better off just buying a $900 laptop with a 1060 than buying a boxed video card.

I understand the advice and I generally agree but I don't want to drop anywhere near that much right now for this system.

How about just getting a GTX 780 for now. I used one of those for 4 years at work as a game dev. Good cards. They look to be $170 range on ebay. I don't know your system specs, but many games are actually CPU-bound. If you have an older CPU, don't drop a ton on a new GPU.

It's actually a good system. i7 4790 4 cores, 16 gig DDR3 800mhz (11/11/11/28). And didn't pay a dime for it XD

The only thing lacking is a decent graphics card and I wouldn't have a single care about its performance.
