I've noticed that some fairly good posts are downvoted into oblivion on voat without any reason... maybe the user is an "enemy"? I'm sure there're some SBBH types that all brigade together on their least favoured users. What strikes me as odd is there is no justification on -5 -7 posts... so five or seven people downvote and don't even leave a reason? weird and not cool. just attacking a user.

Wouldn't it be nice if people had to at the least justify downvote? It's an opportunity to learn how to better post if you really fucked up as OP... however most things shouldn't be downvoted though if there's effort from OP... amiright? thoughts?

No. Downvoting is mostly for spam, and that needs to be efficient.

Why would we need a reason? If a post is shit, its shit.

Don't do things that make communities angry at you as a whole and this won't be a problem. For example, if you come in spouting racist things, you should expect to downvoted into oblivion. So it's likely that people who are downvoted like crazy are people who have done something to one or more users who don't or won't forget what kind of user they are.

Think of it as an anti-virus.

As a community I hope we can avoid too much of that type of butthurt. A user having posted something 'bad' in the past isn't a good reason for ongoing downvotes in my opinion.

It's not just posting. There's a whole host of behaviors that are worthy of a community's ire and they can all be summed up as "divisive". Now whether you define that as arrogance or insane to the point of expletives or some other behavior, if it breaks the spirit of the community, it doesn't belong. Call it a "social contract" to which you agree when you join that community. If reddit, it's generally radical left viewpoints. If voat, it's radical right. If raddit, it's extreme radical left. If facebook, it's.... well, more leftist behavior. If tumbler, it's a whole different collection of unhealthy behaviors. If steemit, it's generally good behavior because money is at stake.

The point of the matter is that it is nature to peck the oddball chick to death and there is generally a good reason for it. Being downvoted should be considered an incentive to learn your community and help them instead of exhibiting contrary behavior.

I hope you're kidding. What you call the 'spirit of the community' I call the retarded hivemind: I'm hoping Phuks can avoid developing one for as long as possible. The exaggerated hivemind is a major reason why reddit/voat/raddle are such terrible places.

If you make people comment so they can downvote, then you will end up with shit comments just so the user can downvote the submission. You would just create another problem.

No.
As the recipient of many questionable downvotes, I wouldn't want to change it in that way.

Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes someone else already explained it, sometimes a user doesn't have the time or will to get into it.
There are reasonable times to downvote without comment. Especially with spam.

It does get abused. I know that very well.
But I think it would prevent more legit votes than illegitimate. Anything that places barriers to participation should be avoided I think.

I think we need to find another solution.
Maybe list the user names of people who up/down voted if someone clicks for details?

Hmmm I think the most I've ever seen is -3 on legitimate spambots

It doesn't seem like much of a problem and I'm pretty sure it would just lead to unnecessarily uncivil/vitriolic exchanges which is really the kind of shit most of us wanted to get away from on other sites.

That was meant about voat... I see certain posts that just get downvoted without any real ideas as to why... other than it's always the same people... I mentioned it wasn't really relevant here

[–] Justintoxicated 1 points (+1|-0)

Yeah, there's definitely massive brigades over there. I'd love to see a comment to downvote policy there, the drama would be through the roof!

I noticed because I check at like 6 am here when I start getting up and there's a guy, maxcactus, who must just be lividly hated because anything he posts goes instant -5... and I checked a few out and they're actually good posts... I think the guy is a labelled shill or something iunno

edit: the drama would be interesting... I assume the SBBH crowd would start the bitching unless putt made an announcement... they all gather around him like sheeple

Anyone else notice the irony of this being downvoted without an explanation?

[–] pembo210 1 points (+1|-0)

maybe like a popup after it goes -1, like "this post is already negative, would you like to let us know why you are still downvoting?" popup. We also have to do a new reporting system.. integrate this while we do the other.
