Mine - Its not that great but whatever - I taught myself a language through song translation.

I was heavily into German Rock music while I was in highschool, and I would translate the non-English songs for fun, with google. By graduation, I was almost able to speak the language. Not fluently, but I got by from the people I knew who actively spoke the language.

Its been 6 years and Im not even interested in the music anymore, maybe from constant repetition of the same 4 albums over and over.

Anyway, Whats yours?

I taught myself Cognitive Behavior Therapy and used it, along with other things to change my life. Also used it to quit smoking and lose weight.

I wanna learn this, too. Howd you do it?

First you have to have a genuine desire to change. I already had that for various reasons. This is harder than it sounds.

Then you need to have some sort of belief that what you are going to use has chance to work.

I was given an example of a little trick some actors used to calm themselves. Little gestures you might see and think nothing of. The example I was given was someone touching their earlobe. Apparently they used this a a trigger to bring back memories of the character they we trying to portray. Whenever they felt in the groove they would touch their earlobe. So when they were on set and weren't feeling in character they would touch their earlobe and the feelings of nailing the character would flood back prompted by that trigger.

In that way I was introduced to the concept that your feelings dictate behavior but that also your behavior can dictate your feelings. I the made my own trigger which I use to this day. I touch my thumb and index finger together when I'm feeling out of my depth and lacking in confidence. Because I taught myself to do this at times when I was actually feeling confident the feelings came flooding back. My back straightened, my eyes made contact with theirs. People started noticing that I was more confident and said so. The finger thing is now a habit of mine and self-serving/reinforcing.

So I started studying CBT in depth. I tried to avoid the obvious cash in self-help books and went for full on academic studies on it. You can train your mind but you have to believe your mind is your tool and not the totality of your existence. I also believe CBT can be a trap if you let it dictate to much of how you live as well. If your dog(your mind) is being a good boy you can just let him be most times. Tell him he's doing well and get on with the here and now.

It was hard work though sticking to the plan.

Fascinating. Im going to try that one day. Ive been in a low point in mg life and had some points where im 'okay, I can move on" which I can use to 'train the trigger'?

Ive noticed when Im having anxiety attack or a mental health issue, I roll my engagement ring around my finger to 'distract me' and keep me calm or to slow down.

I want to read up on this and learn more though. Im fascinated.

Programming. Since I was 8. I now have a very well paying job programming. I mean, yeah, I took classes so I had that slip of paper for my first job. But I taught myself.

Way to go!

Its always that piece of paper. Mine is taking a damn 800page exam for 7.5h for $1300, With a $1,000 study book.

Damn those fkn papers.

SAT or ACT? Only good for college. My ACT score was 32 (which is above 1400 SAT new, 2000-2100 SAT old) and it only helped me in college. After that, no one cared.

Tought myself how to properly mill aluminum with my first AR lower....gained confidence and each time I squeeze that trigger or watch the wife do it gives me a little more of that warm fuzzy to know that if I am not around she can and will protect herself.

I sewed a button on my shirt and found it extremely relaxing, so I thought how could I make a hobby out of sewing and discovered leathercraft. Within a few months I'd made a handbag for my wife. Super proud.

[–] [Deleted] 0 points (+0|-0)

Why does this remind me of 'something from nothing?'

Like that childrens book.

Do you still have the shirt?

[–] keebyjeeby 0 points (+0|-0)

Actually no idea which shirt it was tbh, but my wife has the handbag and all of her friends gave me a lot of kudos for it.

Something I've taught myself:

-At the risk of sounding meta, I taught myself how to tech myself. I found things that motivate me, and use them as rewards for learning things I find boring. This, along with self control, has been the single most important skill I've ever developed.

Something I've done:

-I quit smoking a pack a day, and it stuck. Its odd to think of it now, but I managed to turn a nasty habit into a sense of confidence in my own willpower. I still wish I never started though. The cravings never really leave.

Way to go on your smoking! Ive been trying, but its hard.

Im interested in your ' something youve taught yourself.' How has it worked in your life?

[–] Sarcastaway 1 points (+1|-0)

How has it worked in your life?

Mainly it made getting a formal education really easy. During college I ended up using my professors as people I could contact with questions, rather than relying on them for their lectures. I'd just read ahead and figure out how to do the homework, then use the time in class to actually do the homework and ask any questions I had.

On the other hand, I've never had much difficulty learning things I find interesting. I think most people are like that. Learning to work on cars was pretty easy because I like cars.

The trick to leaning things you like is just trial and error. Learning things you don't like is the same, but you've got to incentivize yourself or else you burn out.

I taught myself car repair, plumbing, electrical, and wood working to name a few.

I made my kitchen table that our family sits at every night. I wired all the electricity in my 30x40 barn. I keep my 17 year old truck running (about to rebuild the transmission). I'm fixing the broken pvc pipe in my yard today.

Never pay someone to do something you can.

I used to be an iron worker. I learned how to tie a bowline and that got me into knots and hitches, The coolest knot I ever learned to tie is a monkey's fist. Here's how.

[–] [Deleted] 1 points (+1|-0)

I wanna learn more about this.

[–] [Deleted] 0 points (+0|-0)

Knots are interesting but if you don't keep at them you lose the technique pretty quick. Most of the knots I used were for hoisting, loading, and tying things down. A few I learned when I started sailing.

Give it a shot.

That's great! How many hours would you estimate you spent learning German? It's a lot easier to keep at a repetetive task if it is something you're enjoying anyway, so while I don't know if translating song lyrics will work with everybody to get them interested, the point is there must be something interesting to each person on which they can use this approach.

Id say it would be a good 2 years straight if I sat down and actually thought about it.

I guess when I got 'bored' of the band not releasing new music and just didnt like the 'sound' of other German bands so I guess youre right - I lost interest.

I completely hear you out, and I wonder what other people's learning styles are if you really get into it.

Im so tired I was about to be like.

'Fake news. Theres no way you're that old.'

Have you made any chainmail? What do you do with your creations?

[–] DKeere 0 points (+0|-0)

Yeah, not really my thing though. All those tiny rivets drive me insane. If I need maille I almost always buy it from someone who specializes in it.
