Not linking to YouTube is not going to do anything to YouTube traffic or stop people from getting paid. It's just too big. The reason people moved to Twitch is YouTube changed the way they hand out the ad money. Without going into too much detail, gaming channels got completely shafted, so a lot of people just started streaming instead.

I do not view this as a replacement, and it is not a viable alternative for the vast majority of YouTube. There are very few channels that can or even want to shift to a live streaming format.

What do you think is wrong with YouTube?

I agree again. But some tried out of desperation, because youtube was playing games. They were hard up for an alternative, but there were none. Some tried going to Twitch, but as you point out, Twitch is something else, so it didn't work out. I'm not talking about gaming channels.

It is a monopoly that uses that position to stifle competition and have direct control over content creators. I want to see competition.

I meant Twitch. Out of curiosity, I just looked hooktube up on Alexa. It is so small that Voat is it's biggest source of traffic. I really don't think it will ever pick up steam or evolve beyond its current point into something else.

The best way to create a competitor to YouTube might be to do something similar to what Siacoin and Mysterium do. If you are not familiar with either, they are cryptocurrencies that are based around distributed data storage and bandwidth sharing, respectively. You are basically paid to rent out your internet or storage space. If you had a distributed video host network, but with a frontend like hooktube, it could work. Maybe have every view count as one coin that is created and transferred to the uploader, with a small transaction fee given to the site for each view. The only thing the site would have to handle is ordinary requests rather than streaming, you could even have distributed hosting for the search results. If something happened to the site, some other portal could be rehosted elsewhere. There would probably be some way to slowly use the network to start archiving YouTube videos too.
