Hooktube or Youtube? Which is preferred?

Hook has been lagging heavily for me lately on and off and not embedding properly. Before anyone starts screeching I'm running uBlock Origin, Ghostery, and a vpn all the time. Content creators may get an extra view but the reality is neither youtube or them are benefitting from my visit. I'm already blocking all that can be blocked.

I think hooktube is not an alternative to Youtube, at least not for content creators

Not at all. It's not even a site, it's just an API wrapper for YouTube.

No, its not an alternative for creators. It's not a hosting site, just a front-end.
But it still takes visits away, and demonstrates that there is a market.

I prefer YT because it's plugin remembers volume. Many vids have a way too low audio level and when you adjust speakers to one of those, you'll wake up your neighbors with a new HT vid before you have a chance to turn down the volume.

I used to prefer HookTube on Voat and always converted. Here I use YouTube for one reason, that being the Phuks video players in music subs. They only work with YT, so if you link HT, it's ignored by the player. I'd still prefer HT, but have chosen to go YT here because of this.

I use YT for music here for the same reason.
I have a complex equation for determining which site I use for different types of videos :)

I may adjust the algorithm after this post. I'll see how the discussion plays out.

YouTube clicks result in content creators being paid, hooktube does not.

It's also just nowhere near as good functionality wise.

Edit: this is also kind of on topic - I hate archive links. They fuck up the page formatting and features most of the time and archives get blocked by my mobile ISP. I get that people don't want to give some sites ad money, but that's why I use a fucking ad blocker.

That's too simplified of a statement to be accurate.
Some YT clicks come with a pittance for creators. But as long as YT has a monopoly it is the creators that will suffer for it.
I would say that you harm the creators by supporting a monopoly.

Many YT creators would love to leave, but they know that the viewers will not.

So I think you've got the first point backwards, you're not helping creators.
The second point is a good one.

I do not share your optimism. There's no way someone is going to create a platform where people are paid for creating videos on the same scale as YouTube. It is a miracle that such a thing even exists, in my opinion. If anyone tried to adopt the YouTube model, they would never be able to make the site keep itself afloat, not even anywhere close.

What do you see as being a barrier against a start-up?

The tec is pretty straight-forward, the hardware is reasonable. I don't see any reason outside of market factors, that it would be especially difficult.
I run a hobby-site that hosts (non-video) content that sends about 300-400gigs of data transfer per month. That is nothing compared to what video hosting rates would be, but coffee is the largest expense involved with running my site.

I don't have any direct experience/knowledge of video hosting, but I don't see where extra and huge costs would come from.
Advertising income would scale up with a site, and should be able to make it a player.
The reason it doesn't happen, I believe, is the entry-fee, and buy-outs. Those can be overcome when there's a clear demand.

I don't care one way or the other. But I do like the easy video downloading on hooktube , but I don't like it being laggy alot.

But posting a link... i will use youtube, hooktube, vimeo or whatever I feel like at the moment.

In the end, that's what I do.
But I like to make an informed decision.

It will have some impact on my habits here though. I post things because I think others will enjoy them.
If they don't like the format, then I might be wasting my time.

I use youtube for all the subs with the built in player because it doesn't do hooktube... Hooktube is a great tool though I use it whenever youtube tries to control what I view
