I was never really interested in it my whole life, but recently have been pursuaded to watch Naruto.
And I love it. It was corny at first, a bit dramatic and contained some questionable elements. But now that I'm a few episodes in I'm hooked. The storyline is an amazing display of character creation and growth.

fan subs? is that where people make their own subtitles? pretty awesome if so.
I have a hard time with subtitles, they always distract me from enjoying the visuals. Guess its just something you learn along the way.
That's exactly right; the community sourced subtitles are usually truer to the material (so I'm told, anyway) and are far less sanitized than something a corporation like Viz puts out.
I struggle a bit as well with the distraction piece...the ones I have for Death Note are yellow and in a decent font, so they're not terrible. It does take some getting used to, though.
Death Note was amazing. Viz killed the localization on it, though - the only way to watch it is with fan subs.
