Why do people today need to care?
Well I care if governments around the world are perpetuating a lie, and an entire race of people are perpetuating a lie for eternal victim status. Truth matters, and when governments that are supposed to be looking out for us are not only blatantly lying, but jailing people for questioning the lie, that's not good.

Do you think that is the only lie the government has told you? Or the biggest lie? Or even one that has the most effect on you?
Of all the lies we are bombarded with every day, why does that one number, that has no direct impact on anything today, stand out as so important?
So many lies, and you're focusing on one that has long ceased to be relevant.
In my opinion there are much bigger fish to fry.
So because the government lies about other things, I am unable to care about this lie?
There are many ways the holocaust impacts American citizens. Without the holocaust and ensuing victimhood, I very highly doubt we'd be sending billions of dollars a year to Israel, perhaps Israel never even becomes the country it is now. Jewish people in America gained a massive leg up because of the "6 million." To say otherwise is willful denial.
Without the holocaust and ensuing victimhood, basically everyone in the western world would be free to criticize jewish actions without fear of retribution from someone or even their own government. Jewish people certainly are free to criticize anyone they want--but the opposite is not true.
Whether or not you actually care about this doesn't make the fact that other people care less significant or important, just as causes you care about are not rendered moot because someone else may not care.
What is interesting is how vehemently some people, and definitely some governments will attack those who go against the narrative of the holocaust. That alone makes anything surrounding the holocaust worth investigating, IMO. If the holocaust truly doesn't matter any more, and has no impact on our lives, why not simply keep quiet and let holocaust narrative disbelievers have their say?
Assuming that's accurate, how does that change anything or have any significance?
Are you implying that killing 600 thousand is fine?
And what connection do the Russian murders have? Stalin being even more brutal doesn't change anything about the Nazis.
I don't understand what point you're trying to make. Why does it matter how many jews were killed?
