Sure, Voat.co is an echo chamber at times. Classless characterizations of essentially anyone non-white is par for the course (no Putt intended), but their meme game is strong even if they're recycling it from xeddit or one of the #Chans. I wasn't really friends with anyone there, but there was an understanding among the oldest accounts, sort of a digital nod to one another on active threads from time to time. Hell, Cancel-Cat-Facts even PMed me the other day, that was pretty cool.

Anyway, I came over here a long time ago with the v/ModernPowers crowd, but I was already becoming something of a lurker on Voat anyway and I couldn't sustain presence on two boards. I'm here now for obvious reasons, and I noticed that there are more rules than I remember, though I could be mis-remembering. Wanted to get some context on them.

  • By using Phuks.co, users will agree to and comply with the following conditions. Your account may be banned for an undisclosed amount of time, or removed completely if the following agreement is not adhered to. Additionally, accounts may be suspended for reasons not listed in this agreement. Ok, sounds good. Moving on.

  • Optional email addresses provided to Phuks upon account creation will be used for account registration, and will not be shared with any other party. Great

  • All users must be at least 13 years of age. Check

  • Infringement of copyright or personal or proprietary rights of any person or entity is prohibited, and the content may be removed upon a legitimate DMCA request. Such content is not endorsed by Phuks.co, nor is Phuks.co liable for any user submitted content. I get it, but I encourage any/all users of the internet to steal as much from BigMedia as possible. They're screwing the consumer, the artists, and the industry.

  • You agree to release us, our affiliates, and third-party service providers from claims, demands and damages of any kind, resulting from your use of Phuks.co. Of course you shouldn't have to pay for my free speech, but will you give out my identity/information if a lawyer emails Phuks?

  • We are not responsible for the actions or content of other sites that are linked on Phuks.co, and you agree to be held solely liable for the posting of such links. Ok

  • Users are solely responsible for any laws they may break by viewing content on Phuks.co. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to: Users under the age of 18 opting in to view NSFW (adult) content, and/or users who view content that is illegal within their own country. I can't believe we even have to say this.

  • All images, videos or depictions of any kind that show sexually explicit or suggestive content involving children (whether virtual or real) is strictly prohibited. Additionally, any other depiction or form of media that shows sexually explicit content which is illegal in the United States (such as bestiality) is prohibited. Additionally, content or communications seeking to solicit, lure or entice minors into sexual activity or lewd behavior is also strictly prohibited. Again, can't believe we even have to say this, and I hope there are measures in place to keep saboteurs from doing it.

  • Posting content of any kind that incites discrimination, hate or violence towards one person or a group of people because of their belonging to a race, religion or nation is strictly prohibited. Now, wait a minute...a lot of stuff "incites" a multitude of emotions, and the word "strictly" sounds like this rule could censor valuable exchanges of information. Will I get banned for citing genetic studies (educational) and Tyrone comics (sometimes funny), or is this section here to curb use of words like "nigger" (a word I never use)? I noticed "faggot" used already, so this just seems like an unusually strongly worded rule and would like to understand the content allowed under it.

  • Using Phuks as a place to discuss, plan or engage in any action that would compromise security, tamper with system resources or accounts on computers at Phuks, or any other site, is strictly prohibited. I couldn't if I tried

  • Gambling is prohibited. You betcha.

  • Users agree not to post sensitive information relating to other user's real world identities without their express consent. (No doxxing) Just Phuks users or is doxxing obnoxious twitter accounts allowed?

  • Users are solely responsible for their own personal information if they choose to share it on the site. I'm male. Oh, and white and obviously over 13.

  • Content deemed to be spam will be removed, and continuous posting of such content may result in a ban. AMALEK LIVES

  • Moderators are not a part of site staff, and may be removed at any time, for any reason. Who are the admins, and have any mods been removed so far?

  • Moderators may create their own rules as long as they do not violate the terms of this agreement. By becoming a moderator of a default sub, you agree to represent the best interests of the community you moderate. Continuous failure to do so may result in your removal as a moderator. Wish I had the time to help

Now, wait a minute...a lot of stuff "incites" a multitude of emotions, and the word "strictly" sounds like this rule could censor valuable exchanges of information. It is vague wording, mostly intended to meet the requirements of the law, and the host terms of service. Rational discussion, even when controversial topics has never been an issue. I've used the word nigger often.
Admins here seem to understand context and intent, and have been very permissive when dialog appears to be the intent.
But they have also expressed a willingness to be less tolerant of those who's intentions are malicious or agenda driven. They don't want this place to become a battleground.

Voat chose to sacrifice the community for an unbending view of free speech. Here they seem to value to community and its needs first. Open communication is a goal, but a sustainable community worth being a part of is just as important.

It's a work in progress, and sometimes they are just making it up as they go.
But they are upfront and approachable about their intentions.

Note, I am just a loudmouth and not an admin.

It's hard to maintain checks and balances without at least one check or balance seeming authoritarian, the price of freedom is having to deal with other people's freedom I guess. Still, if I ran a free speech site I'd do my fair share of pruning because having some woke liberals around actually makes for good internet.

I was able to tune out most of the trash on Voat, most of the really aggressive hateful stuff recently were brand new accounts (shills and saboteurs) or established trolls roaming around v/niggers and other weird places like SBBH. I stuck to v/all and blocked all the racist subs; solid insightful memes always made the front page.

Sometimes?

Yea, the people who went to Voat with an agenda are what really made it toxic there.
