Most players at that level are in it for some insatiable desire for power. I don't think Elon is. I think Elon made his fortune with Paypal and has been doing what he enjoys since.
I believe he pursues space travel because he is a geek in love with the stars, not for fame or fortune.
To have achieved his position and influence without being corrupted is heroic.
To use that position to elevate mankind as a species is legendary.
