Voat is not all bad - and despite the best efforts of the admin there, they have not yet been distilled into a single depressing mind. They seem to value family and extended family highly, and believe that impractical altruism is foolish, I basically agree with those sentiments.
'Rise above' is perhaps putting too positive a slant on it, but we have the ability to think and reason - some of us have come to value other things over, or in addition to familial ties. It is a difficult process learning to trust a stranger, but I'm sure you support and would sacrifice some things for people outside your extended family who promote ideas that you strongly believe in.
I assume you have some basic empathy as well? If you were directly confronted with a stranger in extreme pain - and could alleviate that pain or not for say, $10, without anyone knowing your decision - would you be tempted to pay?
