I think it is more complex than that.
There are a large number of different motives at play. Not everyone on either 'side' is organised and in total agreement.

The most effective players are those that like to start fires(the type I think you're referring to) and those who like to feed them (PV and others).
It takes both groups working in tandem to draw in and Polarize everyone else.
It is a formula that prevents honest and genuine communicating and ensures nothing constructive will happen.

But for many involved, that is the goal. Drama is fun to play for some, and fun to watch for many.
This is why we can't have nice things.

I find the best way to exit an argument with them is by pressing the x on the voat.co tab.

But if you really don't want to give him the last word, just start replying with weird shit that's irrelevant to the conversation. Copypastas, shock sites, things like that. Depending on the sub you might get banned for spamming, and you'll definitely get downvoted hard, but at least you'll be at the end of the comment chain, and therefore win the argument.
