I see so much entitled selfish small minded behavior that I don't imagine you would see 50 years ago. Feel free to tell me this is wrong but explain why the individual should come first please.

For a very long time only group-thinking cultures could both survive and thrive.
Today that is no longer necessary. A person can disregard or entirely abandon their tribe and still do fine. Combine that ability with the, possibly related, trend of teaching children that they are special, valuable, and of the highest importance, and you get the modern rejection of putting others, or ideas, above our own wants/needs.

It is actually a part of the natural human cycle. We are solidly in an age of decadence.
Decay will transition in next, then destruction, then rebirth.
History repeats itself. We have seen this before. We are at the same stage Rome was just before the split. Lets pray we don't hold on for a thousand year death though. I'd prefer if we could get to the rebirth in time for my Great-grandchildren to have a good life.

With the western population fat and ignorant I do not see us holding on unless some kind of mass religious fever sweeps the west. My worry is that with the decline the nukes will fly and leave nothing for the future generations but suffering. You clearly see the problem but it does not make sense why so few do.

This is why we must colonize other planets.

Now that mankind has the ability to eliminate itself, it is only a matter of time until we do. Given enough time, all that is reasonably possible will happen. A chain reaction nuke launch only needs to happen once, to end all life on this planet.

So we need to be sure that we don't have all our life on just one planet. "Don't put all your eggs in one basket".

There is no guarantee that we will wipe ourselves out during the next destruction phase. But it won't be our last destruction. Since we may hit a technological capability of settling another planet before the next destruction, I hope we do. It's the only way to be sure.

Come to think of it, there is one way we can be sure of never destroying ourselves. We could just get hit by a comet first. Either way, I am brain-washing my daughter to like the idea of becoming a space-colonist.
