I know the history and significance, but just seemed like a waste of bullets. Same with the Thompson......just bullet hoses lol.

I don't disagree, but one of those ... they all gotta have one kind of things more or less. And I think they likely had only one per squad, where the majority had rifles.
It was a sub machine gun ... everyone had one ... Germans had the MP-40 Schmeisser in 9mm ... Russians had the PPSh-41 in 7.62x25 ... US had the Thompson and the M3 (Grease Gun) in 45 acp. They were meant to be short range (still thinking WWI trench warfare), kick a lot of lead out type weapons and not for long range as in rifle.
