Is that just simple heating the metal with a torch until it starts to change color? Is there more to that? And would it compromise the metal itself? As long as it’s not the barrel or the action parts I guess it wouldn’t matter.

It's a technique that was common before the 20th century. You heat with bone and wood charcoal. Too much and it gets too brittle. The idea is to essentially create a thin outer layer with the process. Stainless steel will easily get that cool effect you're talking about w/ a torch.
