One of these days, I'll have to tell you 'bout my experiences with archaeology. I dated an archaeologist and have volunteered on some digs. But, volunteering for digs doesn't actually mean you do anything cool (most of the time), it just means you lug dirt from one place to another place.
To date, I have found zero anythings important. Every time I thought I found something awesome, I was told it was not awesome - and either a piece of wood or a rock, usually a rock. Well, sort of... I did find what was a hearth - 'cause the ground was discolored. But, they made me stop digging in there and let a grad student finish it. They found nothing interesting.
If you've volunteered enough, they'll let you dig a little. It also helps if you date one of the site archaeologists. Still, in my experience, they stop you once you find something interesting.
Wait, I take that back. I did find a fossil. Unfortunately, the fossil had absolutely nothing to do with anything and it was just some dumb plant fossil. It wasn't even a dinosaur foot or anything nifty. Still, I've done a bit of digging and lugging heavy stuff.
Hmm... I guess I kinda told you about it now, though the stories are much longer - but unwritten. The moral of the story being that you're encouraged, and invited, to go volunteer on a dig. It's a bunch of hard work but it's interesting to see the finds come out of the ground. For two seasons, I went up to Nova Scotia and volunteered to dig for a while. My people are from Nova Scotia and our past was largely erased/forgotten as we assimilated quite early.
