It's not really mentioned here, but the disappearance of the Romans had a massive knock on effect that is still present today. The power vacuum created in their absence was the main cause of the church becoming a powerful governing force for the next 1000+ years. If there was something else to fill that void, a lot of countries would be vastly different today, including countries not even "discovered" in that time period, like the US.
