Fuck them for their deceptive and extortionist business tactics.

They offer a free service to file taxes and then claim you can't access full deductions unless you upgrade.

I have the most basic filings in existence, I dont need all the bells and whistles. Just the most basic package to accomplish my filings.

Now they're holding an additional $100 unless I pay $40 to upgrade. Fuck this shit and fuck turbo tax.

You have to go through specific portals to get their real free products.

It's also possible that you're trying to claim a deduction that isn't covered in the (smaller) version that they use for free. If I were in your shoes, I'd screenshot the bait and switch and save it somewhere, go somewhere local to do your taxes, and then send them the evidence when they nag you to finish.

I've used the free H&R block service, actually free. They try to sell you to file your state, but once your Fed is done, usually it's a simple matter of transferring the information onto your state's website (same for city if you need to).

Currently I upgrade to a paid H&R block service, my taxes are now more complex and go into areas not covered by the free service, but I still feel it's a good value for the price.

I've been using TaxAct, cheaper and less predatory than TurboTax
