I don't think the people who are distracted by Trump are the same ones that were concerned with the NSA spying.

Maybe I am wrong, but it does not look to me like the modern left cares about privacy.
The classic left cares, but is not heavily distracted by Trump.
And the right is not distracted by Trump either.

Those that are so focused on Trump mostly never cared about individual freedoms anyway.
At least, that is how it appears from my vantage point.

I think you're right but I would frame it in terms of moderatism instead of classic vs modern left. Or pragmatists vs idealists.

The moderates are up in arms because technology and science are trendy and threatened. They are not very idealistic but they see the value of science and tech (from a pragmatic or consumer perspective at least). These people will repeat the Nothing to Hide mantra when privacy is mentioned because there are no immediate tangible repercussions- so it doesn't matter to them.
