when you join an arguably evil religion
Very few religions, philosophies, or ideologies are "arguably evil" within its own ethical paradigm. But from the perspective of outsiders, all of them can be.
And to say they "joined" puts too much agency on them. You don't join your parent's religion; it is just who you are. At some point in your tweens you'll choose whether to leave. And leaving is rough. There are few bridges you can burn that are more significant than the religion of your friends and family. Especially when they are being persecuted by the "arguably evil" Powers That Be.

I'm not even playing that game. The cliche exists worldwide. That's not because someone decided one day to make the world hate them.
You don't join your parent's religion
The moment you realize that you can join another or leave altogether and do not, that means you've joined it.
Stop with the word games. I won't play them.
Things are cliche for a reason and the Islamic religion is cliche about killing others. The only reason most people are upset is because those people are... well, people. If they really cared, they would have hopped all over this last year. Don't get me wrong, treating people like this is evil, yes, but when you join an arguably evil religion, you get what you deserve.
