The park is an important wildlife haven as well. Wolves and lynx roam in and out. Heavy-shouldered bison make up part of the largest remaining population in Europe. The forest has a rich array of birds, especially woodpeckers and owls, as well as almost 10,000 insect species and 1850 kinds of macrofungi, most of which thrive on the abundant dead wood that litters the forest floor. Many are found only in Białowieża Forest and are listed as endangered.
