Does anyone have ideas for a way to discover subs at posting time?

Use cases:

  • when you have a topic in mind and want to see if a sub exists to subscribe to,

  • when you're about to post something and want to see if there are appropriate subs (perhaps ones which are not obviously named).

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

Thinking about this some more, it could be well executed with meta tags, sort of like how YouTube does it. The only problem is that anybody can put any tag on their subs. It might be something head mods would have to watch over, perhaps.

Anyway, you could use those tags to search for similar subs.

oh, we might be able to do one those "tag clouds" and make sub names bigger or smaller based on creation date or post amounts

I think this is a good idea. Maybe allow 5 sub tags when you create a sub, and have someone that checks them occasionally to make sure nobody is messing about with their tags.

For what it's worth, if you're on the front page you have a button on the right labeled, "View random sub". That's not quite what you're looking for, but it's a start. The only flaw I see with it is that you can't keep hitting the button because it disappears after you're off the front page.
