As a backpacker in the Southwest, this kind of shit gives me nightmares. People always ask me if I'm afraid of running into a bear or mountain lion while backpacking. I'm truly not. It is much more likely to get bit by a rattlesnake. Fucking hate them.

yeah, me too. Snakes, spiders, and scorpions are all on my short list of things to look out for while out in nature.

Spiders are generally friends. Don't hate just cause they're crawly. They eat a lot of things you'd rather not have near you, including scorpions.

i find my house's ecosystem fascinating. if there are too many spiders, i let the centipedes live. if there are too many other bugs, i kill the centipedes so the spiders can clear the place. i feel like i should let a couple mice out and buy a cat to add some more layers to the food chain.

I saw a rattlesnake a few days ago on my walking path, which is maybe 200 feet from the ocean. I normally walk at night and now I'm super cautious when I walk. I had no idea they were in the area. I walk in pitch black some nights, and knowing there are rattlesnakes there is unsettling.
