Detecting that a user modified a config file would be trivial...just take an MD5 hash of the file when the game ships, then compare that with the data file and it could be detected (however, it would require the executable to update whenever that config file changes by the devs). That would make the storyline pretty cool if they did something with it.
I thought about trying to make a CrossCode map...their original crowd sourcing had a thing where if you donated $5000 or something, they'd let you help develop the project and design a zone, secret area and quests. I hope there is some sort of modding support for that game because that could end up being fucking awesome.
I don't even know if it would be possible, but there is an opportunity for the devs to do something really cool with this. If someone tries to edit character attributes, have some kind of discussion about your character cheating when you start playing the game again. It would fit in because it's supposed to be in an MMO.
Also if you end up making CrossCode maps you have to send that to me.
