I'm also a big fan of Mirror's Edge. I basically agree, the more I knew the layouts and the levels, the more I enjoyed playing through them.

The original Mirror's Edge is one of my favourite games. On my first playthrough, I became very frustrated with some of the level design, the short length of the game and the extremely bland storyline. My frustration with the level design stemmed from two things - not always knowing where to go in the later levels because they have a much more difficult layout, and several small puzzles like shutting off steam pipes that made me feel as though they were halting the flow of the gameplay.
But, after you have played it a few times it becomes an almost perfect game. If you know the general route to follow, you can play the entire game running without stopping, and you will find faster variations of different routes every time. The only things that will halt you are the elevators used as loading screens and the wheels used to shut off steam pipes, which both become a kind of pause for you to think about the route in the next bit of the level and how you're going to get through it. The elevator controls can be triggered with a slide kick, meaning you dont even need to slow down to get into the elevator. The storyline doesn't bother you anymore because you just skip it.
It's the perfect "finish in an afternoon" game. If you're really bad at the game or playing it for the first time, it'll take 5-6 hours absolute max. I've finished it in just over an hour before, but that was the end result of playing it every day for 2 weeks. At first I was excited for Catalyst because I really wanted to see what an open world version would be like, but I don't think I will ever play it because it just can't compete with the linear flow of the first game.
Dat soundtrack too.
