Well, we believe certain metals that do not have much practical use are far more valuable than those that do have a practical use. We even think those precious metal and stones are worth absurd amounts of currency, a belief which has existed for over 1000 years. The practical uses versus then assumed value of those metals or stones then sometimes those metals almost never go into practical use at a higher price and they are instead stored or displayed to show you've obtained those precious metals or stones.
TL;DR: yes
