The problem was not in itself diversity, it was taking characters that people loved and had grown to know over the decades and then completely ignoring that. Any good writer knows that you don't fuck with characters that work, instead of appropriating old characters they should have built new characters to create fresh set of books the new generation felt they could own (or reject). If Marvel has to lose money to learn this lesson then they should, DC didn't go up and decide to make Batman a suburban Asian-American girl who is into hip hop and vampires or go and suddenly make Aquaman un-gay.
Appealing to people who don't buy comic books is a bad idea. Same for games.
