We don't need each side's posturing articles or vague quotes about what somebody didn't "hear" or "not that exact phasing" to figure out how it went down. Probably not much conversation would be needed anyway. Even if the conversation did happen, it went something like this:

Biden: The killing of Khashoggi was a brutal act and a violation of international norms and human rights. It's not the way we want an US ally to act. Did you do it?

MBS: I was not involved and was shocked.

Biden: Good then, you had me worried for a minute. I'm glad we answered the questions and can move on and strengthen our countries' relationship. How about pumping some more oil?

MBS: Ok dear friend, how about some more weapons

Biden: Ok, I know our boys are Raytheon are always glad to help an ally

Reuter's journalist: US stood up for its values

Al Jazerra journalist: This conversation never happened.

Both sides save face, bury the incident in history, and move on with more pressing strategic concerns.
