How is this any different than any of the many nuclear aircraft carriers the US uses? Those ships are using nuclear reactors to create large amounts of power as well. The only difference here is Russia wants to transfer the power off of the ship. So how is that more dangerous. Is it just that the Russians don't exactly have a stellar reputation for nuclear safety?

At I guess, I'd say it generates far more power, hence would make far more mess if it breaks, and is far less capable of running from storms. There's probably a good reason they built that monstrosity rather than running a cable from one of their nuclear powered submarines.
