Calendars are arbitrary, man-made devices used for gross time keeping. Time zones are another man-made construct also used to simplify timekeeping across the globe.

On an Equinox, ignoring artificial days and time zones for moment, you can be assured that at a certain point in the Earth's rotation, there are exactly 12 hours of light and dark. You simply don't notice it because it isn't aligned with established timezones and you weren't at that spot to measure take measurements.
