Fried green tomatoes are disgusting. A vendor at the farmers market tricked me into buying some, and it was one of the biggest regrets of my life.
Maybe they were just crappy tomatoes. I've had really good fried green tomatoes and just "meh" ones
Fries green maters are similar (to me) to okra, which is the vilest vegetable.
Wait until the end of the season. Anything not red and ripr at that time, can then be picked as green. You then get the best of both worlds.
