Every year, I have a toad that lives in my external garage. He kind of hangs out in it in the day and hunts and hops around in my yard at night. He's been there since I bought the house and he's back again this year.

Makes me kinda weirdly happy that a toad thinks my property is his home too.

May he live a long and hoppy life.

I looked it up and they can live 10+ years. He's been in my garage for at least three years now...

He's cool. We kinda chill in the yard or garage sometimes, just kind of watching each other. Surprisingly, my dog hasn't tried to eat him yet. But I have a temporary housemate and I'm pretty sure one of his dogs is dumb enough to try.

I've yet to see our two this spring but my wife said she saw one of them dead in the driveway. I named one of them Trevor in honor of the toad in Harry Potter.

Toads are cool, especially if they keep coming back. Helpful for gardens and pests. A shame.

I know, the slug population is booming in my yard and my lemon tree seems to be bearing the brunt of their slimy onslaught.

Crushed eggshells. They can't walk over them. Or run a line around your tree with copper (2 wires). Something about their slime generates electricity.
