Destruction of history and culture is right out of the marxist playbook. Those claiming the country was never great are the same ones who topple statutes

Yep, and that kid who spit on the toppled Confederate statue had no idea who that statue was. It was just mob rule.

It's almost a cliche to claim that liberals hate America, but it really appears more and more true every day; they hate its history, traditions, and people and want to reshape all of those to their preferred vision.

That is a very sweeping statement, can you explain what you mean?

Sure. Generally speaking conservatives tend to revere the past and want to return to it. Their ideology in many ways is built around celebrating actions and policies of the nation in the past. They are naturally very proud of the country's history and accomplishments and will tend to minimize any injustices in the past by mentioning other instances of outstanding accomplishments. In summary, they tend to be nationalistic and glorify the past. This reverence doesn't have to be entirely correct or the complete story, but it makes it easy for conservatives to love the country.

Liberals and progressives are in a predicament: if they focus too much on the accomplishments, traditions, and positive history of the country, they play right into the conservative narrative about the exceptionalism of the country and the glory of the past. Their values also focus more on instances of injustice and inequality, so the past and traditions are filled with far more instances of shame and things that should not be repeated from their perspective. Far more of their platform is focused on changing things about the country and reversing policies in the past. This makes it somewhat contradictory to love the country and its history-- certainly to the elevated degree of conservatives.

All of this is of course stupid and people on both sides should see a more nuanced version that the country got a lot right (and a lot of that is worth preserving or returning to) and still acknowledging that some things can change for the better. I attribute some of the stubbornness to the ridiculous "team sport" version of politics we have where each side refuses to acknowledge anything that contradicts its team position so as not to give the opponents "points".

I broadly agree with what you wrote there but it bears very little resembelance to your original statement.
