Today it's on sale for $40 but first time users of their shop can take an additional 10% off the first order making what's typically $400 only $36.

It's a hell of a deal considering that's considerably less than what some services charge yearly. Not trying to shill anything. There's other services out there. Some are better and some are worse depending on what you're looking for. Just thought this was a particularly good price and figured I'd share. My sister and mother aren't great about security so I primarily got it for devices they use on public wifi. Saves me any yearly subscription fees. I won't be cancelling my other vpn service though b/c I appreciate the fact they don't keep server logs while this one I'm unsure of but I'll look into it more later.

If this entity more trustworthy than your ISP? When both are sketchy it is really hard to say.

All comes down to trust in the end and what you're looking for. If you're just trying to stop a credit card thief at starbucks most are fine. Better one's have a reputation for not keeping logs but that's a leap of faith in itself.

I've never understood the use case to be honest (outside of a corporate network).

Public wifi really isn't that dangerous so long as you visit encrypted sites (and ideally pin certs, but that isn't for beginners) and have good DNS. As you say we're taking it on faith that these providers keep no logs. There is of course Tor, but then lots of sites are unusable, and you know for sure that you're being monitored and there are definitely bad actors trying to mess with things there, so that isn't a good choice.
