For me, I used to take Centrum (a popular multivitamin my dad had me take since I was 10 or so) daily for decades, I stopped several months ago when I ran out and was too lazy to get more. I felt no different. I would assume I'd feel a deficiency not taking it but I never did. I started having doubts, so I changed things up a bit.

What I take now as supplements, not all daily, but often:

  • Protein supplements for exercise (whey isolate only with no flavor and minimal ingredients)
  • Iodine, a drop a day, the only daily one I still use because I can feel when I don't
  • Milk thistle for my liver - I like to eat a lot of toxic raw seafood like oysters and it seems to help
  • Fuck loads of B-vitamins after I drink since alcohol burns B-vitamins fast af

For avoiding:

  • Fluoride - I buy expensive water filters to get rid of fluoride. If you take care of your teeth, there is no need for it. It can only harm you.
  • Tap Water - Similar to above because I live in SoCal and sewage is treated and dispensed as drinking water. The pharmaceuticals are not filtered well at city level, so I filter them myself. I used to take my male cat to the vet for urinary crystals (kidney stones for humans) multiple times/year, I started filtering it with good filters, never had a problem with him since. Thousands of dollars lost to him not being able to pee from drinking tap water, never has an issue with properly filtered water. Please do the same. I may gift you a filter if you need if you have cats and message me if you can't afford it.

I don’t take anything. Figure that yoi shouldn’t try to fix something that isn’t broken.

I eat lots of veggies and fruits. Probably contains everything that those daily pills have in them.

I used to take Osteo Bi-Flex for my Joint pain, and it did help quite a bit. But I ran out one day when I was broke as fuck and I just started being more active and my joints only bother me when the weather goes through drastic changes.

Now, the only supplement I take is Beer. To help maintain my awesomeness.

Glad to hear! You might want to try super concentrated turmeric on the days it gets bad. I have awful joint pain in my shoulders and it's something I've been meaning to try

I lean towards getting my nutrition from raw foods, but I do take supplements once in a while. Boron, tumeric with black pepper, fish oil, kelp, d3, thiamine, reishi mushroom, shilajit, apple cider vinegar, oregano oil, L arginine glutamine lysine, magnesium, vitamin c and sunlight is what I take.

apple cider vinegar,

I use a ton of it on my coleslaw I make every week or two, mixed with red wine vinegar. I never heard of oregano oil before tho, maybe I'll give that a shot over the olive oil

How's the ON multi? Do you get nauseas if you take it without enough food in your stomach? Do you feel better when taking it? Centrum made me vomit a few times when I skimped on breakfast

[–] [Deleted] 1 points (+1|-0)

It never upsets my stomach but they do smell and taste terrible. I gag taking them sometimes. Also turns your pee neon yellow when you haven't taken it in a while. I do feel better taking it though and have more energy.

Most of the time I don't.

But when I'm close to having a cold or whatever, I take some "whatever the UN decided".

3rd world refugees, internet censorship and organized invasion of Africa cures your colds?

[–] Sarcastaway 1 points (+1|-0)

Magnesium, zinc, D3, and a multi vitamin protein shake when I don't have time for a bunch of vegetables at breakfast. Ive also got Bs if I need an energy boost, and about 100 other things I don't take unless I have various symptoms.

I'm skeptical on what people claim zinc does. One of my best friends takes a fuck load of zinc when he feels a cold coming on because his brother says the zinc cured him once.

[–] Sarcastaway 1 points (+1|-0) Edited

Well, zinc is very much a necessary nutrient. Zinc is used by the body to maintain hair and skin, to regulate the immune system and mood, and the production of testosterone.

So in the case of men, zinc plays a big part in developing and sustaining muscle mass, sexual stamina, fertility, growth of facial hair, and contributing toward baldness. Testosterone also plays a part part in female biology, but I've never bothered to read up on that one.

You've got to be careful about dose though. Zinc toxicity is nasty. Overdoses will cause all kinds of painful stomach issues. A too-high dose over a long period can block your body from using iron and other good metals in your diet, which can cause severe anemia.

But to answer your question about zinc and the cold virus, I'd take a guess and say that if you already have proper levels of zinc in your diet, you won't benefit from taking more. In fact, nutrient deficiencies might be the reason your friend's brother is getting sick in the first place.

Edit: and on the subject of alcohol, consider taking some magnesium too. Alcohol makes you pee out more magnesium than normal

[–] jobes [OP] 1 points (+1|-0)

Neat, thanks for the great write-up. Is there a way to know if you're zinc deficient?

Also "Alcohol makes you pee out more magnesium than normal" never knew that

I only add extra ascorbic acid to my diet during cold season - mostly by adding lemon juice to my tea and food where applicable.

Tap water is very drinkable in Germany, so no need for me to avoid it. If I were really paranoid about how they process that, I could even reach a fresh water spring straight from the source within walking distance of my house.

[–] jobes [OP] 0 points (+0|-0)

I used to get water from a spring when I lived in Ohio to get extra nutrients from the limestone it ran off of. My former house water was from a well also which was pretty great. It's only after I moved to California that tap water became subject because it's fucking awful here

[–] [Deleted] 1 points (+1|-0)

i don't. i used to take centrum just to try to even out my diet some but, like you, felt no different with or without it and my diet is good enough.

i have no scientific evidence or research to back myself up here but i've heard whey isn't as good as other sources of protein. i eat almonds after a good anaerobic workout, they can be a bit hard to choke down but chocolate milk after a run is even better for you and even harder to gag down. i don't trust hippies or corporations enough to try their herbal supplements and i expect i get too much iodine from salt. as for water, i don't give a shit about fluoride because lead is the real issue. if your house is some 50+ years old, check yo pipes! they're probably fucking lead!

[–] jobes [OP] 1 points (+1|-0)

i eat almonds

My breakfast driving to work is either raw almonds or walnuts. Those are the shniz.

chocolate milk

Could never even though I heard it's great. White milk ftw. Hate chocolate.

expect i get too much iodine from salt

Many salts are no longer iodized and many types of salt never contained iodine. For example, I grew up using a kosher salt (not jewish) because it was great, but no iodine in kosher salt. Iodine was added only to some salts as a helpful supplement.

check yo pipes

Literally just had them all replaced 3 months ago, no joke
