Why do we care?
Voat is always in drama mode, if there is nothing, they manufacture it.

Can we just leave the drama over there?

Let's talk about cats

Will we have a s/meanwhileonvoat subverse someday?

[–] PMYA [OP] 2 points (+2|-0)

Probably. I'd rather not though because /v/MeanwhileOnReddit got old quickly.

The subs existence and my ability to block it helped me avoid most of the reddit drama. I support it.

That is one way of looking at it.

Perhaps we will have no need for one at all though. I've been inviting a couple of people from Voat here and there, but honestly the number of users I wouldn't invite far surpasses the amount I would. I do not think Voat is a viable place to bring users from any more. All of the people posting good content left a long time ago.

So yeah, we won't need a meanwhileonvoat because I doubt there is anyone on there who will end up here now. I personally won't be inviting anyone from Voat anymore because it's so difficult to find a single person who would be a half decent addition to the userbase. It's easier to look elsewhere.

i'd rather not have those kinds of subs around. they tend to only get worse over time

I'd like to point out that the warrant canary does not state that it will be updated on any particular timeframe. If it isn't updated as of right this moment that is always indication that they may have received a warrant since the last update. Freak whenever you feel like it.

SO true!

It does kind of undermine the idea of having a warrant canary if they don't update it on a timeframe though. Now people are going to ask Puttitout if they have received a warrant and he's either going to say they haven't, or he isn't going to be able to say anything at all, leading to speculation.

The warrant canary is one of those things that they said they would automate fucking ages ago and still haven't done it.

They seem like busy people. Is Voat what they wanted it to be do you think?

[–] PMYA [OP] 2 points (+2|-0)

I suppose it is, because they paid out of their own pocket to keep it up. Which is quite baffling to me because they made no attempt whatsoever outside of bitcoin donations to monetise the site, even when they had a period of a few months where people were flocking to Voat from Reddit.

A warrant canary is not something you want to automate, that just makes it worthless. If it's automated, it could be updating while Atko and Putt are rotting in a jail cell for all the users know.

I remember a user heckled the admins initially for doing this. And so they changed to manually updating it.

[–] PMYA [OP] 1 points (+1|-0)

That is a good point.

Atko could be rotting in a jail cell right now for all the users know. Hasn't been active regularly for a very long time.

I tend to agree with Schneier on canaries. It's at first a reasonable idea, but courts will almost certainly rule that you violated the order by communicating, in a passive manner, the existence of the order. It can be argued that you took action (ceasing to update the canary) to alert people that you received an order.

[–] [Deleted] 1 points (+1|-0)

That's untested though and a lot more people agree that compelling a person to say something untrue would go against all sorts of existing precedent.

If the canary were automated that would be one thing. They might be able to compel a person to do nothing and just let it update on its own, which is why you never want to automate a canary.
