seems like complete media distraction tactic... there's worse almost daily in the states but this is a big deal? what about the lone shooters running around? That's just ok and not media worthy?

It's not weird at all. The media lives from clicks, so they need some sensational headline every day. Reporting on the real problems is too boring to be profitable.

Because the vast majority of the media focus on an agenda they wish to push. Anything outside that narrow window isn't news to them.
