Big Mouth is a relatively new show on Netflix that my wife and I watched a few weeks ago and really enjoyed. It basically follows 5 teenagers (Andrew, Nick, Jay, Jessi, and Missy) as they struggle with the horrors and wonders of puberty.

Aside from the animation being pretty good, the good cast of voice actors (Jordan Peele, Maya Rudolph, John Mulaney, Richard Kind, and others) really helps bring what could be a bad show into something really good. The humor is unrepentantly over-the-top and lewd, but never feels like it's trying to be shocking for no other purpose than to shock. The show does break the fourth wall a few times, but it's OK in these instances; I don't really mind it. It's also self-aware in this sense too, it's clear the writers realize what kind of show this is and aren't trying to take it too seriously.

One of the striking things to me was how it's kind of accurate, despite it's over-the-top nature. The whole time, I was kinda like "yeah, that kind of is how it is", and I think my wife felt the same. It's something that basically applies to everyone, since we all go through puberty, and the hormone monster (and monstress) play their roles as our not-yet-understood raging emotions and raging boners beautifully well. Much of the humor subtlety speaks to truth, which I why I think the show is compelling enough for my wife to want to watch a second time, so we're going through it again.

It's currently only 10 30-minute episodes, so watching the first one or two is probably enough to tell if you'll care for it or not. But I think it's quite good, and deserves a quick glance from most people who don't mind the sexual humor and somewhat sexual focus of struggling with growing up at an uncertain time.
