Rudd says we can do so much more. The PM has announced an international forum to get internet companies to address radicalisation online. We want them to focus on two things, she says: taking down material that radicalises people online; and stopping people exploiting end-to-end encryption.
And here is a quote from just after the Westminster attack:
The home secretary said it was “completely unacceptable” that the government could not read messages protected by end-to-end encryption and said she had summoned leaders of technology companies to a meeting on Thursday 30 March to discuss what to do. But she stressed it was her desire to persuade internet and social media companies to cooperate voluntarily with the government on this and also the posting of extremist material online. “We need to make sure that organisations like WhatsApp, and there are plenty of others like that, don’t provide a secret place for terrorists to communicate with each other.” She indicated that she hoped to be able to win them over without resorting to legislation.
What are banks/companies in this country going to do if encryption legislation starts outlawing their security? Half the time, encryption isn't even used in communications between terrorists, and if the government starts removing things from unsecure public forums or starts blocking unsecure private messages, you can absolutely guarantee that terrorists are more likely to use secure services.
How the fuck is this even going to stop terrorism? They're going to stop using encryption to plan murders because it is illegal?
