The amount of money they raise vs spend on relief is really not clear. The Red Cross has consistently claimed 91 cents per dollar, but they retracted that and numbers are probably below 70 cents per dollar. But it's really hard to tell what that number really is, because it's really easy to find sources to cite they only spend between 8 to 39 cents per dollar.

So, no one really knows where the fuck the money goes that they donate to the red cross.

It's also the case that even if you are donating for a specific reason (for hurricanes Harvey or Irma, for instance), your money (whatever percentage of it) is not guaranteed to even go for relief for that disaster, as they also use many donations as a stockpile for "future disasters" as well.

Which is probably good management and all that, but it's disingenuous to say "donate to victims of disaster X" and then not put that money towards that cause.
