"Every time somebody proposes to do anything, you have multiple political subdivisions stand up and yell about it," he said. "That's great if it makes people feel good, but they're only costing themselves. The notion that somehow it's helping anybody is wrong."

There's a lot of truth to that. People want safe and secure long term storage facilities. But no one wants those facilities anywhere near them.

Okay, understandable, but they also refuse to allow the cargo to be transported through their rail yards or freeways. This has created a car more potential danger as the spent fuel and other hi products continue to build up in containment vessels that were never intended for such large amounts for such an extended period of time.

Yucca mountain was the most promising repository until it was shut down. Eventually we'll run out of room to store it on site due to indecision.

Additionally:

As for the safety of these transportation casks, there's been extensive testing over the last 50 years to confirm that they can take serious punishment without cracking or leaking.

I am curious what the scenario they mentioned that would result in a failure could actually be. (intense fire to melt steel perhaps?) but it's understandable why that is classified.
