I'd say that the original "republic" as it was intended changed with the Civil War / War of Northern Aggression. The others mentioned by the author would indeed be labelled as such for dramatic effect, as you pointed out.

i'd agree that we are entering a new era but i disagree with naming each era of american history a separate republic, even if just for dramatic effect.
